The term Microsoft Excel Database has never really sat very well with me since my primary role in the IT world has been in developing database and what is used by the spreadsheeting fraternity is what I consider an over glorified list.  However, for the sake of peace, I want to outline some of the principles you must follow in building what is known as the Microsoft Excel Database

Let us review …

A database in essence is what is considered a collection of information that is related in some manner. For example if you were running a company and selling a product you may have a database that simply lists all of the sales you have made over a period of time.  Storing this data in a database would make sense as the company information and the selling of a product is related and as such would be appropriate for the database.

There are many different types of databases available such as Microsoft Access Databases, Oracle Databases, MySQL databases and so on but Microsoft Excel also has a form of a database known as a database list.  The form of the list is virtually the same as the other databases as the data is under column headings in rows, but after that common point, the Excel database goes in its own direction. See, to look for specific data within a Microsoft Excel Database or Excel List we do not use the common database language of SQL, we actually use specially written functions. These functions are custom written by you and are known as criteria.

So how do we create an excel database

Well first off, there is one rule we must always follow and that is one excel database per worksheet. Anymore and you just get yourself into lots of trouble. In fact if you need to have multiple excel databases within your workbook simply put each excel database onto a separate worksheet.

The next thing you must follow is that your database lists first row must contain the heading of the list.  That is the first row contains your field names. Plus each of the field names must be 100% unique.  You cannot have two field names with the same name or again you will have a list that will not work.

The next issue you need to be concerned with is identifying the field names. Excel databases have a simple rule, the field names or column names must be unique. Now the way you identify them is easy, all you have to do is to ensure the field names are many different data types, format, pattern etc to the rest of the database in your list. Generally what I do is to format my field names in bold to satisfy this requirement.

One of the most important rules you must remember when you create an excel database is that around the row and columns of the fields and data there must be a blank row and column.  What this means is that you can still have a heading at the top of the fields, but there must be a blank row between the heading and the fields as well as along the last column as well.  The blank row rule also applies to the bottom of the list as well.

When you are entering data into your list, every cell in every record must contain some value even if it is simply blank (a blank value is still considered a value) and each record must contain the same number of fields.  If there is no specific data for a field you simply leave it blank and move to the next field.

Ensure that when you are entering data into a field that you don't have spaces before the text or at the end of the text in the field.  If you do have spaces, then what will happen is that sorting and search for data in the list will be compromised and you will get unexpected results.

Upper case and low case characters in the field do not affect the searches or sort orders unless you specifically tell the Microsoft Excel application it is an issue.  You can also use formulas in a cell if required.  Formulas can refer to cells within the Excel Database List or outside of the Excel Database.

Note also that you can edit and format the cells just like any other spreadsheet however the issue you must consider as a priority is that the field names must have a different format to the rest of the data in the database list.  It is highly recommended that there be no other formatting in the list except for the field headings. This ensures that there are no miscalculations by the application as to what is a field heading in the excel database and what is not.

Now that you have setup your list in this way following these rules, you are now ready to interrogate the list by applying criteria.  The easiest way that you can do this is by using the Form dialog box. To get into the Excel Database form you simply choose the Data menu and then choose Form from the drop down menu.

From the Excel Database Form you can simply choose the Criteria button, type the criteria you have for your data and choose the Find Next button and it will take you to the first record that satisfies the criteria you are searching.  Excel Databases are particularly useful for summary data that is where the volume of records you have in your database doesn't exceed 65,536 rows. 

If you follow these rules to create an excel database you will find that the functions associated with the excel database list will work in an effective and efficient manner.

Selling or renting out lists is not a good idea so rather than doing that, many companies would just rather place ads with lists that have a huge subscriber base. Your newsletter could be placed with many ads and each one spells money.

2) Have affiliations with other companies that have at least a semblance or relation to what your site is about. Here, other companies will provide links and brief descriptions of what their products and services. With every click made on the link that directs or leads a subscriber from your list to their site, the company will pay you. This P4P or pay for performance.

3) Make deals with other companies by asking for a small percentage of sales done through your list. With every sale done by customers that have come from your list and have gone there because of your newsletter, the other company will pay you a small percentage of your sales. The more people who buys from them, the more earnings you get.

4) You may also get products from other sites on a consignment basis and sell them to your list via your newsletter. Place descriptions, articles and photos of the product in your newsletter. There will be those who will buy from you and when that happens, you can order the product from the other site and sell it to your buyer.

5) Sell e-books or a compilation of your articles on your list. Manuals and how-to articles are in great demand. Many people will be willing to shell out money to gain knowledge about a certain topic and subject. With your existing list trusting your expertise in that area, an e-book could be offered and sold or used as an incentive.

6) Create a network out of your list. Get people to invite more people to view your site and subscribe to your list. The larger your list is, the more people will be able to click on your links and affiliate links as well as make your advertisement rates higher.

7) Subscribers are willing to pay for information if they know that it can be trusted and relied upon. Use your list to get more and more people to subscribe to you as well as browse your site. Lastly, you can use your list to earn money by making them your partners. Your list will be the bloodline of your growth and increase.

When Kyle and Carson announced the released of Inside the List. I was skeptical at first because I didn't think that my niche site would generate some cash just by having a list. But I tried it anyway because I have read free guides on how to build a list and they were just plain crap. The basics are there but I already know them, what I needed was solid technique and skill, one that can rip out my revenue records in a month's time.

So I read Inside the List and there, what I found is extremely valuable information. Among other things, the strongest feature of Inside the List is that Kyle and Carson explain the why and the how of their techniques. They don't just show it to you step by step. Yes, there is actually solid theory behind the techniques they use.

Now why do you want to know that? So that you can apply their techniques in any niche regardless if you think it's a profitable one or not!!!

Using one of the techniques in Inside the List (adding value to consumers before anything else--the gist), I made 8 sales at $68 dollars each in ONE of my niches which is Golf related. Let me tell you that I never expected them to follow my recommendations and actually buy Golf clubs through my affiliate link! I posted some links for them to check out because I think those golf club prices were great deals. And the best part is, I just ran a test Adwords campaign that redirected to a squeeze page for one week and collected email addresses.

All in all my Inside the List experiment which brought about this Inside The List review was a great success. I'm sharing this with you because I'm extremely happy with the results and I'm going to apply this to my other niche site which is related to bodybuilding.

I have been reading recently about the benefits of article marketing. A recent post to the ezinearticles blog asked if writing articles was worth wasting time over. I have been writing articles for quite a long time and in my opinion it certainly is. I will explain why I think it is in this article.
Around a year ago I wrote my first article and posted it to ezinearticles, which many people regard as the best article directory/website. Looking back I have to admit that I did not really know what I was doing, and in truth the article was not that impressive. I continued to write more articles and continued to make mistakes.
Unlike other directories who seem to accept any old article, ezinearticles check what you are submitting. In these early days a guy called Wally would regularly e-mail me with advice on how I could improve my articles. At that stage my articles were too short, not thought out, and basically rushed. I did not realise the value of writing articles and did not make the required time available for this form of web promotion.
I found it difficult to keep thinking of new material and fell into another trap of re-submitting articles I had already written. I would change a few words or would re-word paragraphs. I was not aware that this was against their guidelines, however Wally soon informed me that it was. Tip, always read the guidelines.
I am now spending a lot more time when I write the articles and feel that they have gradually improved, this has been confirmed by Wally himself I am pleased to report.
As for the benefits of writing articles and is it worth your time and effort? I have had e-mails from all around the world from people who have enjoyed reading my articles, maybe I am a bit sad but this gives me a little buzz. Some of these people have included the article in their blog or on their website, thus creating an additional backward link to my website/s.
The people who read the article are potential visitors to your site, a visitor you would not have had, had you not written the article. That visitor could of course turn into a client or purchaser of your product/s.
For me search engines are going down the path of seeing one-way backward links as by far the most powerful form of link. Many people are offering link exchanges with other websites to boost their page rank or search engine position. There are many automated link building programs which make link exchanges even easier to obtain. Search engines have realised that this is taking place and place a much lower value on these type of links. One way links are not as easy to obtain, however writing articles has the potential of creating many one way backward links to you site and therefore is a must for any serious webmaster.
I have not written nearly two hundred articles and have seen huge increases in traffic to my websites as well as increases in their page rank.
People may disagree with my belief that article marketing is worth the time and effort, I do not really care as it works for me.

The tedium of this kind of manual labor may make you think twice about writing (and posting) your next article.
